Dominion Two: urban adjacent object
Semesterübung WS 04/ 05 Universität für angewandte Kunst, Wien - Architekturentwurf 2, o. Univ. Prof. Greg Lynn

The ambition is a nexus of horizontal, diagonal and vertical structure, circulation and urbanism.
The topic is the fusion of a multi-layered urban base of the Dominion Centre that integrates mixed uses with a long span structural system that is capable of integrating transportation routes, some functions, adjacent facades, elevator/escalator circulation and urban paving and site surface area.
The analysis of the 10 urban precedents should guide the massing and organization of the site. The Potato 2 task should be the basis for the structural and circulation lattices.

The horizontal boundaries of the site are York, Adelaide, Bay & Fronte Sreets. The buildings between Wellington and Fronte Streets can be demolished for the new programs. The vertical limit of the site begins up to 100 feet above the existing plaza and continues to the center of the earth.

The functions and activities, in addition to the existing towers, are:
- a new long span horizontal roof structure and urban plaza
- the existing vertical circulation and facades of 2 Mies and 3 Miesian towers
- the existing PATH system of underground shopping and pedestrian circulation
- the existing bank pavilion
- a new subway station
- a new light rail station
- a new satellite airport check-in
- a new annex to Union Station with 4 regional and national high speed rail lines
- the conversion of Tower 4 into a residential tower
- the conversion of Tower 5 into a hotel and conference center
- a new 12 theater multiplex cinema
- a new parking garage for 1000 cars and 150 buses
- additional uses for both the surface as well as the tower conversions are both possible and encouraged

The project should be aware of, engage and extend the principles of :
- continuous floor plate circulation established with the precedent of OMA's Jussiue Library Competition entry.
- thickened occupiable slabs of Herzog and de Mueron's Tokyo Prada.
- horizontal structures that become vertical surfaces and hollow voids from UN Studio's Arnheim Station & Coop Himmelblau's BMW Event Center.
- occupiable structure of Toyo Ito's Sendai Mediatheque.
