SPECIALISATIONS

Paintings
The study of the conservation and restauration of paintings includes working with a wide variety of support materials, not only the traditional Western canvas and wooden panels painted with traditional materials, but also those of non-European origins. Classic and Modern painting are cornerstone fields in reaserch and treatment. Extensive studies in preventive conservation, exhibition installation as well as the care of collections not only in museums are the focal points of the curriculum.

Objects
The largest variety of materials is to be found in the specialist area of objects, which covers the conservation and restoration of 3-D artefacts of applied arts, crafts, technical history, monuments and architectural heritage, sculpture (metal) as well as the treatment of archaeological and ethnographic items. Metals, enamel, ceramics, glass, miscellaneous organic substances are the basic materials with which students work. Early plastics and other synthetic materials of the 20th century extend the spectrum.

Stone
The course´s emphasis is the conservation and restoration, protection and care of natural stone as sculpture or architecture, as well as its surface treatments. The curriculum encompasses basic sculpture techniques, with an emphasis not only on studying current approaches to the preservation works in stone, but also their implementation with modern materials and methods of conservation and restoration. Developing and realizing concepts for care and maintenance of archtetectual monuments is another focal feature of the programme.

Textiles
The field of textiles offers numerous conservation challenges. Both individual objects and whole collections provide instructional material for learning and developing conservation treatments and preservation strategies. Not only costumes and uniforms, pieces of fabric, large objects including tapestries, carpets and wall-coverings but also leather and modern synthetic items provide the focus for this area of study as well as archaeological and ethnographic textiles. Frequently, a textile´s combination with additional materials such as stone, metals or paint, requires close interdisciplinary work with other areas of conservation.
